LCDR Ashleigh Murriel, PHD

LCDR Ashleigh Murriel, PhD is a health scientist in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity’s Program Evaluation Branch. LCDR Murriel serves as an evaluator for SPAN, HOP and REACH cooperative agreements. As the co-lead for the Division’s Health Equity Workgroup alongside the division’s Director, she provides leadership to key initiatives to promote organizational change and increase staff and recipient capacity to promote health equity in obesity prevention. LCDR Murriel has represented the CDC as a child obesity and health equity expert on several national committees including: the United State Department of Agriculture/Health and Human Services Birth to 24 Months Dietary Recommendations Federal Expert Work Group, the American Heart Association Obesity Workgroup, and the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team Meeting. LCDR Murriel earned her bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Spelman College with the honors of both Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. She earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from The Pennsylvania State University in human development and family studies, where she was the recipient of the University’s prestigious Bunton-Waller Fellowship.
